Ronald Ray Speir and Sheree Lynn Peveto Speir, both graduates of Brazoswood High School, 1974 and 1975, respectively, collectively served the Brazosport Independent School District for more than 50 years.
Both Ron and Sheree attended elementary and intermediate schools in Lake Jackson. While at Brazoswood, Ron was elected Most Representative for his senior class, was on Student Council, was a Class Officer for three years and was actively involved in football, basketball & track - as an accomplished pole vaulter for the Buccaneers. Sheree was a Buccaneer Belle, Sophomore Class Favorite, a member of the National Honor Society, actively involved with Future Teachers of America and was a Cum Laude Honor Graduate.
Ron and Sheree, friends in school, began dating in college at Southwest Texas State University and after graduation, chose to return to the Brazosport area to marry and raise their family. They shared a calling in life - to serve the Brazosport community, specifically choosing to empower the youth of southern Brazoria county to better their future and the community through education.
Mr. Speir worked at Clute Intermediate, Brazoswood, Lake Jackson Intermediate and in administration for BISD. While teaching at Clute Intermediate, Ron coached multiple sports and helped foster a passion for school and academics in his students. He worked with them to show them the parallels between sports and life. Former students still stop him to say – “Coach! I got a job," or “Coach, this is my son and I’m working with him the way you worked with me.” As an assistant principal at Brazoswood High School and then principal of Lake Jackson Intermediate School, Mr. Speir continued to impact the lives of students and staff. Before leaving BISD, Ron served as an Executive Director for six years in central administration leading the offices of Student and Administrative Services and Human Resources. Ron Speir has gone on to continue to serve in education, although in a different manner - as the Business Development Manager for the Associated Builders & Contractors of the Texas Gulf Coast.
Mrs. Speir worked at Brazoswood High School for many years in the science department sharing her expertise in Health, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and AP Biology. While working at Brazoswood, Sheree took numerous students to open heart surgery observations and other special hospital visits in the Texas Medical Center. These trips sparked a passion and desire in her students to enter the medical field. Sheree loved to introduce her students to the world of Science, especially Anatomy, and the endless possibilities that that field had for their lives as far as their health and careers. In 1996, Sheree was selected as BISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Speir was awarded the Lamar Award of Excellence in 1996 and the Science & Engineering Fair of Houston – Teacher of the Year in 2000. In 2005, Sheree accepted the opportunity to serve BISD as the Science Curriculum Facilitator. While in administration, she initiated the Science Leadership program for Elementary, Middle, Intermediate & High School educators, Initiated District Science Lab Safety Procedure & Inspections and was the Coordinator of the Brazoria County Science Fair. Sheree retired in 2013, after serving as BISD’s Interim District Curriculum Coordinator.
Ron and Sheree Speir have also given back to our community through service. Ron has served on the committee for the Walk for Habitat & Student Penny Drive, on the Board of Associated Reciprocal Safety Councils, currently serves with Upward Sports Ministry and the Walk to Emmaus Ministry. Sheree devotes her time to the Cradle of Texas Emmaus Community, Upward Sports, Bible Study Fellowship and as the Children’s Program Teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Speir are also both very actively involved in their church, the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson.
The Speirs have two children - Jennifer and Michael. Both children attended BISD schools and are graduates of Brazoswood High School. Jenni graduated from Texas A&M University and is currently completing her Masters of Physician Assistants Studies at the University of Texas Health Science in San Antonio. Michael graduated from Baylor University with an Engineering Degree and is employed with Dow Chemical. Michael is married to another BISD graduate and they have two children – who are future BISD students.
Ron and Sheree Speir just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and we celebrate the impact that they have made in the lives of thousands of students in BISD and southern Brazoria County in their over half a century combined years of service to our schools and our community.
