Dow Awards Education Grants to 4 BISD Schools

The Education Grants Program gives K-12 schools the opportunity to receive up to $10,000 in grant funding for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects. This year, four Brazosport ISD schools applied for and received grant funding. Congratulations goes to Griffith, Polk and Velasco Elementary schools along with Freeport Intermediate for being selected as educational grant recipients as part of this year’s Dow Gives Education Grants program.

The award winning projects included:

Madge Griffith Elementary Principal Karen Matt and Assistant Principal Ken Wilson were awarded $8494.48 in Dow grant funds to purchase and implement an Outdoor STEM Learning Lab, transforming  green space with an outdoor classroom for inquiry-driven learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)..

Gladys Polk Elementary teacher Susan Geisler was granted $7600 to assist in the purchasing of  a Full STEM Ahead: 3D Market Day learning experiences and opportunities for the entire school.

Velasco Elementary teacher Frances Macomber was awarded $6,500 to purchase technology for the schools Mobile STEM Lab that will turn any classroom into a high-tech learning environment, with all the tools necessary to deliver dynamic, interactive lessons on almost any science, technology, engineering and math subject.

Freeport Intermediate Assistant Principal David Rayburn will use the $10287.50 grant funding to   purchase an Aquaponic STEM Lab, a hybrid food growing technology combining the best of aquaculture (growing fish) and hydroponics (growing veggies without soil).

The Dow Chemical Company Foundation provides this opportunity to K-12 schools in Southern Brazoria County in an effort to increase interest and excellence in math and/or science. Winning schools will now have the opportunity to incorporate new technology and curriculum enhancements to the science, technology, engineering and math programs they offer their students.
