The Brazosport Independent School District District Education Improvement Council approved the district’s Local Innovation Plan during a public meeting held on April 6, moving the district one step closer to being designated as a District of Innovation.

Passed during the 84th Legislative session (House Bill 1842), the District of Innovation designation permits local school districts to obtain exemptions from certain provisions of the Texas Education Code that allow for more flexibility and local control for innovative programming. On October 25, 2016 the BISD Board of Trustees passed a resolution to initiate the process of pursuing the designation of District of Innovation. A Public Hearing was held in November to allow the community the opportunity to learn more about the designation and to provide feedback to the BISD Board. A Local Innovation Plan Development Committee was appointed by the Board to develop the Local Innovation Plan.

The proposed Local Innovation Plan will go to the BISD Board on April 18, 2017 when they will vote on their intent to adopt the Local Innovation Plan. Notification of their intent will be sent to the Commissioner of Education. Then, on May 16, the BISD Board will vote on adoption of the Local Innovation Plan. If adopted, BISD will be designated as a District of Innovation and the exemptions listed in the plan will immediately go into effect.
